Whispers of the Water

Out here in the African bush, where the sun sets in gold and the rivers carry ancient stories, I’ve come to know one of the most mysterious giants of the wild—the African hippopotamus.

Most guests think of them as lazy, floating giants, but I’ve learned there’s so much more to these animals. During the day, they rest in the water to stay cool. But once the sun goes down, they rise like shadows and silently walk long distances through the bush, following paths their ancestors created.

One of the most incredible things I’ve witnessed is how they “talk” underwater—deep bellows, clicks, and grunts that travel like whispers through the river. Even when they’re submerged, they’re never silent. They’re mothers calling to calves, bulls marking territory, or simply staying in touch with the pod.

On my game drives here in Grietjie, I always stop at the Olifants River. It’s one of my favorite places. Sometimes we see the hippos lounging in the water—but more often, we hear them first. Their voices carry through the stillness, giving us just a glimpse into their secret world.

Have you ever heard the hippos speak? I’d love to hear your experience in the comments.
